UFI's Successes: 2006
UFI named Carol Soelberg president. She succeeded Sharon Slater, who served in that role for five years.
Independent evaluation of the Stay Alive program (Panos, Panos and Cox) reveals a story of overwhelming success in the eight African nations where the abstinence program is taught. Evaluators reported a 61-percent drop in pregnancy after the Stay Alive Program was taught in the schools. The program has reached more than 800,000 students in nine nations
At the Commission on the Status of Women, UFI and coalition allies presented
a flyer showing that 89 percent of the deaths of women and girls worldwide
are unrelated to sexual and reproductive rights. Several delegates quoted
directly from the flyer. As a result, the final document issued from the conference
was much broader in its understanding of the health needs of women.
UFI hosted a conference on international adoption with government officials from Mozambique, convincing them to soften opposition to adoption by American families.
UFI launched the “Restore Marriage, Canada! Project” through the UFI Canadian affiliate to support the effort of the newly-elected Conservative government in trying to reverse the legalization of same-sex “marriage” in that country. The project was led by Dr. Grant Hill, a former Member of Parliament who was the Family and Health Critic and a member of the Privy Council.
Lobbied congressional and committee offices in support of the Marriage Protection Amendment and provided research and analysis support for key offices and staff.
Through the Arizona affiliate, gathered a large share of the signatures for the Arizona marriage amendment petition effort.
Through the California affiliate, helped organized grassroots pressure on the California legislature in opposition to several irresponsible bills that would promote homosexuality and other abnormal sexual orientations in the schools.
Joined Townhall.com, the premier conservative Web site on the Internet, to increase UFI's ability to educate the public, the media and policy makers on the defense of marriage and other family issues.
Through the UFI Idaho affiliate, led the successful effort to achieve Senate passage of the Idaho marriage amendment, putting it on the ballot in November.
