Protecting Our Children
California 's Law May Affect Our Children

The State of California passed two laws that ultimately may affect our children's school books. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed both of them in October, 2007.
One bill that was passed is Senate Bill 777, which bans anything in public schools that could be interpreted as negative toward homosexuality, bisexuality and other alternative lifestyle choices. In other words, “mom” and “dad” are forbidden in discussions of parenting. These parental descriptors are being replaced by words relating to homosexual, transgender and bisexual lifestyles. The state now refers the use of “mom” and “dad” as discriminatory. These changes are to be reflected in textbooks as well as speech.
As if these anti-family developments aren't bad enough for the families of California, there is also the fear that the Golden State may start trends that spread across the United States. The changes reflect a direct assault on families and parents. Some families have pulled their children out of public schools or moving out of the state. The state is also cracking down on home schooling.
Governor Schwarzenegger also signed Assembly Bill 394, which targets parents and teachers for indoctrination through “anti-harassment” training.
Assembly Bill 14, also signed into law, prohibits state funding for any program that does not support a range of alternative sexual practices, including state-funded social services run by churches. Affected will be day cares, preschool or after school programs, food and housing programs, senior services, anti-gang efforts, jobs programs and others.
Most states do not suffer from such oppressive laws, but it is likely that legislators in almost every state will try to move us in California 's direction. We need to be wary and speak up for values.
