Sign the International Petition Urging Canada to Restore Marriage

Posted by Carol Soelberg | June 8 , 2007

Previously this spring, I reported to you on efforts by our Restore Marriage, Canada! affiliate to persuade Canadian citizens to petition their government to legislate marriage as the union between one man and one woman. In 2005, the Canadian Parliament changed the definition of marriage by legalizing same-sex "marriage." Now, those of us who are not Canadian citizens can join in Restore Marriage, Canada's! efforts to petition the Canadian government to restore the original definition of marriage.

Non-Canadians can electronically sign the petition on the Restore Marriage, Canada! website.

Citizens of Canada can go to the same website and still sign their petition, too.

Please sign the respective petitions and urge your family members, friends and neighbors to do likewise.

Why should non-Canadians be concerned about what is happening in the North American nation?

Canada does not require that two individuals be Canadian citizens in order to marry there. As a result, same-sex couples are traveling to Canada to be married and then returning home to challenge their home country's marriage law limiting marriage to a man and a woman. This has happened with residents of several nations. In plain words, Canada's same-sex "marriage" law is undermining the institution of marriage in many other countries around the world. So, it is incumbent upon us to get involved in this effort to advocate for change in Canada. By uniting in this effort with our friends in Canada, we can help support marriage in our respective homelands.

Will this petition make an impact?

This apology can indeed be very influential on elected officials in Canada and in other countries trying to defend marriage. It can be used to focus attention on the real issues in the debate and on what is truly at stake. The publicity this apology generates can be very useful to pro-family groups around the world. Such groups can use it to help alert citizens to the dangers of legalizing same-sex "marriage" and in mobilizing public opposition.

Here is what the international petition actually states:

We, the undersigned, citizens of the states and countries of the world, respectfully wish to draw Canada's attention to the following:

That the recently passed Civil Marriage Act legalizing same-sex "marriage" violates the natural right of a child to know and be raised by both his or her father and mother.

That this right is recognized in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, Articles 3 and 7, to which Canada is a signatory.

That Canada does not require Canadian residency for those wanting to marry. That same-gender partners are traveling to Canada to be married, and then returning to their home countries and challenging existing marriage laws.

That the solemnization of these marriages by Canada is detrimental to foreign marriage laws and children in other sovereign nations.

That long-standing marriage laws have been the foundation of families and civilizations and provided for the protection of children around the world.

Our UFI and Defend Marriage sites offer numerous articles explaining the benefits of traditional marriage. These articles provide useful background information that will assist you in articulating the value that traditional marriage provides to society.

We plan to help Restore Marriage, Canada! in the gathering of these petitions until early fall. Then the signatures will be submitted to the Canadian government. There is strength in numbers, so please lend your name to this effort today. Thank you for your time and assistance!
