Victory in the U.S. Supreme Court! Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Restored
Posted by Carol Soelberg | April 7, 2007
Last week's U.S. Supreme Court decision supporting the ban on partial-birth abortion is a long overdue victory for families. We are grateful that babies, just seconds from completed birth, will no longer suffer this inhumane and grisly fate, and we are relieved for what the decision says about the United States. Namely, that the U.S. is no longer willing to stand for the legality of such a heinous and barbaric act.
It is amazing that the margin of victory was narrow -- just 5-4. It is almost beyond comprehension that Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, John Stevens and David Souder dissented from what should have been a clear-cut and unanimous decision. It is almost beyond comprehension that lower courts had previously applied the brakes to law banning partial-birth abortion, requiring the Supreme Court to settle the issue. Congress had banned partial-birth abortion in 2003, and President George W. Bush signed the bill into law. Three federal courts struck down the law, which was in limbo until last week.
The reason I say "almost beyond comprehension" is because the abortion lobby is extraordinarily powerful. The abortion industry is well funded, to say the least, and its money, power and influence have made abortion a "sacred cow" to the Left. Those who support abortion rights have a long history of distorting facts and poisoning the climate toward a culture of death, and they continued doing so right up until the bitter end when they attempted to make the Court believe that partial-birth abortion was medically necessary.
The culture of life is growing stronger and stronger. The sanctity of life is one of the pillars of respect upon which United Families International is structured. Every human being is valuable and deserves the right to live from conception to natural death. Human beings need protection from those who would destroy embryos through experimentation, abort those with diseases and cut life short through euthanasia. Every child is wanted by someone.
We are fully dedicated to the protection of human life -- on local, national and international levels. The recent Supreme Court decision is a great victory for human life on one battle front, but the larger fight for life is far from won. Please contribute to UFI today to help us work for the sanctity of life. For just $25, you can become a member of UFI and receive a copy of our "Guide to Family Issues: Abortion." This guide contains a considerable amount of information on partial-birth abortion. It can help you educate those in your circles of influence so that together we can create a culture of life.
