Out-Matched by Opposition Funding; UFI Introduces New Plan
Dear Friend of the Family,
I am often asked why the “anti-family” agenda is given so much attention when most of us know relatively few “anti-family” individuals. How many homosexuals or transgender individuals do you know personally who are out demanding rights to marry? Or demanding to cross-dress at work? In other words, where is all the “noise” coming from?
Our staff has conducted research on opposition organizations, their messages, goals and funding. While the information gleaned is revealing, it is also frightening because the mega-millions raised by these organizations perpetuate much damage to the family.
Opposition organizations greatly outnumber pro-family organizations, and their funding and media saturation far exceed our own. Opposition outreach is pervasive. These organizations reach into practically every corner of the world and every aspect of society – in an attempt to “normalize” abnormal behavior.
Opposition funding influences the media to change attitudes about homosexuality, bisexuality, homosexual adoption and marriage and alternative lifestyles. Opposition strategies have heavily targeted religious denominations to undermine traditional morality. And, of course, the schools are targeted because it is easier to change the impressionable minds of children than the long-held beliefs of adults.
Following is our review of some of the top-funded opposition organizations.
Planned Parenthood International
In its annual report for 2005-2006, Planned Parenthood International indicated total revenue of $902.8 million. A third of that, $305 million, originated from government grants and contracts, while $212 million came from private contributions and bequests.
Marie Stopes International (MSI)
Most Americans are not aware of this family planning organization, but it performed 400,000 abortions in 38 nations last year. Marie Stopes International claims it “ protected more than 9.86 million couples from unwanted pregnancies” (emphasis added). MSI performed 50 abortions for every baby it delivered. Additionally, Marie Stopes International was a co-sponsor to the recent Women Deliver Conference, an event which encouraged an accelerated worldwide abortion pace. In one recent year, funding for Marie Stopes International originated from 29 nations, the World Bank, the United Nations, the European Union and several other large and powerful organizations.
American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)
In 2005, the ACLU generated $26.8 million in revenue to support an anti-family agenda which includes, among others, the following:
Minors' rights to reproductive freedom;
Marriage for all persons regardless of gender;
Pornography as a freedom of speech right;
Same-sex adoption; and
The goals of homosexual pressure groups
The Gill Foundation
In little more than a decade, the Gill Foundation has become one of the nation's largest private foundations focusing on “lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender civil rights.” During these years, the foundation has invested more than $110 million to support programs and nonprofit organizations in the U.S. that share its commitment to equal rights for homosexual, bisexual and transgender people. Gill is extremely well organized and extends its influence and money far and wide through a large grant program.
Tim Gill used the millions of dollars he earned from inventing Quark software to found the Gill Foundation in 1994. With its mission to secure equal opportunity for all people regardless of sexual orientation or gender expression, the Gill Foundation provides millions of dollars annually to homosexual pressure organizations, public radio, liberal churches and organizations.
Human Rights Campaign (HRC)
Claiming to be “America 's largest civil rights organization working to achieve gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality,” HRC generated $42 million in revenue and support in 2006. Its fundraising has more than doubled since 2000. In the past eight years, HRC has raised just under $300 million. Working with religious leaders and laypeople, the Human Rights Campaign aims to bring about radical social change and acceptance to programming like “Brokeback Mountain,” “The L Word,” “Dirty Laundry” and other unsavory titles.
We have not covered them all; there are many more well-funded organizations jack hammering away at the foundations of society. The power and the money of these groups are staggering.
We cannot sit idly by and assume that our values and the family as we know it will survive on their merits alone. Current and future generations are at risk. Opposition organizations find allies in virtually every legislative body in the world, exposing us to social upheaval through laws, court decisions and elections. The battles to be fought are not off in the distance; they are here today.
We cannot match these organizations and their mega-wealth, but surrender is not an option. UFI will never surrender. We will work harder and smarter than ever to counter the power, wealth and harmful messages presented by our opponents, and we appeal to you for help.
