Our Members Agree: Traditional Family is Basic Unit of Society

August 15 , 2007

Recently, we surveyed our news alert recipients. It is important for organizations to know the demographics of their members. It's even more important to know how connected members are to an organization's operating assumptions.

For instance, UFI operates under the assumption that the family is the basic unit of society . We use scientific research to support our views in favor of the sanctity of life, parental rights and religious liberty. The preponderance of this research shows that intact families fare better than broken or cohabiting families in many physical and psychological measures. Men and women are not interchangeable; boys and girls need a mom and a dad. The family is under attack and marriage is vulnerable, barring federal marriage amendments.

In reviewing the surveys returned by our members, we learned that there is a solid connection between our readers and the efforts we are most involved in. Here are some of the key findings of the survey which was included in our July 23rd news alert:

In answering a survey respondent who inquired about the definition of social science research, it is the study of human society and of individual relationships in society. UFI diligently scrutinizes social science research appearing in scholarly, peer-reviewed journals, along with books written by experts in their respective fields, official government reports and other credible sources. Our “ Guides to Family Issues” booklets include hundreds of social science research citations, all of which we verify at academic libraries in order to assure fairness and veracity in our reporting. In the interests of intellectual honesty, we quote only credible research findings in our publications. We do not cite our own personal opinions or any claims that cannot be supported.

In our estimation, the surveys are a representative sampling of our membership. Of those who returned surveys, 57 percent were female. One-third of the respondents to the survey were in the 51-60 age range, and 64 percent were married with children in the home. Fifty-three percent have college degrees and 28 percent have graduate degrees. Thank you to all who participated!

Warm regards,
