Pro-Life Coalition Letter Delivered to Sponsors of Women Deliver Conference
LONDON -- The members of a pro-life/pro-family coalition last week attended the Women Deliver Conference here. They monitored speeches and workshops, many of which focused on a universal call for abortion on demand worldwide. Among the attendees was Laura Knaperek, executive director for United Families International. At the close of the conference, the coalition presented a letter to the organizers of Women Deliver expressing alternative views on women's health and well-being.

of the Conference "Women Deliver"

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED ORGANIZATIONS, wish to express our profound disappointment and dismay that the Women Deliver conference has failed to meet its stated objective of addressing Millennium Development Goal 5, which is to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity.
Delegates were invited to attend a global conference on the causes, prevention and treatment of the complications of pregnancy and childbirth which lead to the deaths of so many mothers, particularly in developing countries, and to consider effective solutions.
Regrettably, the conference agenda was so preoccupied with promoting the ideology and practice of abortion that the genuine healthcare needs of women and children were virtually ignored in the plenary sessions and overwhelmed in the panel discussions.
Numerous UN reports, such as The World's Women 2005: Progress in Statistics, have concluded that accurate data about maternal mortality, including abortion, are not available, especially for the developing world. Therefore, the presentation of unsubstantiated and unreliable data on illegal abortion as fact can only be seen as a deliberate attempt to mislead the conferees and the international community.
To assert that ¨unsafe abortions¨ are only those that are illegal, and to subsequently imply that legal abortion is therefore safe, is both disingenuous and scientifically flawed. The fact that the World Health Organization (WHO) will not be collecting information on the morbidity and mortality related to legal abortion is unconscionable if there is truly a commitment to accurate and meaningful data collection on morbidity and mortality statistics.
The consistent assertions that improvements in the maternal mortality rate are dependent on the promotion of legal abortion not only diverts attention from the urgent need for basic heath care, skilled birth attendants and emergency obstetrics, it threatens to undermine the field of obstetrics and gynecology if implemented on a wide scale.
Furthermore, we oppose the fact that:
- Members of the organizing committee, including the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) and Marie Stopes International, who have financial interests in the provision of abortion, have used the conference to promote a private agenda to spread abortion throughout the developing world;
- The organizing committee has attempted to manufacture a false consensus by ensuring that only the views which reinforced its pre-conceived ideas were represented during the conference;
- The conference has sidelined the main issues related to maternal mortality (basic health conditions based on vaccine availability, clean water, sanitation, basic nutritional supplementation, primary medical post-natal and peri-natal care, fistula, female genital mutilation, hemorrhage, sepsis, obstructed labor, eclampsia). Such sidelining is a serious act of negligence which leads not only to continuing, but increasing, the risks associated with maternal health.
We call upon the conference partners to focus on basic health care, skilled attendants and emergency obstetrics, which have been the key to decreasing maternal mortality in the developed world, instead of exploiting the tragedy of maternal mortality to promote abortion rights.

Les Femmes De Differentes Association Internationales Denoncent Le Silence Sur Les Consequences Traumatisantes De L'Avortement
(Londres, 20 octobre 2007).- “Il est nécessaire et urgent de remettre en cause la politique de l'ONU sur l'avortement. On ne peut plus continuer à parler d'avortement “sûr” tant il est clairement démontré le contraire. La société doit être informée, entre autres choses, des risques psychologiques que comporte l'avortement pour la femme”, a souligné Lola Velarde, présidente de l'Institut de Politique Familiale pour l'Europe.
Mais le fait le plus préoccupant est la main mise continue sur l'ONU de grandes organisations mondiales telles que la Fédération Internationale du Planning Familial (IPPF), propriétaire des avortoirs aux Etats-Unis ou Family Care International, association dont le but est de promouvoir l'avortement en tant que ‘droit reproductif' qui sont à la base de l'organisation de ce Congrès.
Le Congrès a laissé de coté les principaux problèmes en relation à la mortalité de la mère : conditions d'hygiène, nutrition, suivit médical et soins d'urgence, ce qui a permis la diminution de la mortalité de la mère dans les pays développés.
C'est un Congrès de manipulation et de nombreuses organisations féminines réunies à Londres ont exprimé leur préoccupation pour le silence, entre autres, de la société en général et du corps médical en particulier sur les conséquences traumatisantes de l'avortement connues sous le nom de syndrome post-avortement (SPA).
Selon l'étude dirigée par le Professeur David M. Fergusson, pourtant connu pour ses positions en faveur de l'avortement, et réalisée sur une durée de 25 ans en Nouvelle-Zélande, les femmes ayant subi un avortement soufrent davantage de problèmes psychologiques. Le Professeur Fergusson souligne le fait que “l'avortement est un événement traumatique pour la vie ; ce qui veut dire qu'il comporte une perte, un deuil et des difficultés. Et ce traumatisme peut prédisposer les personnes à des maladies mentales. C'est pour cela qu'il plaide désormais pour que les femmes et les médecins cessent de considérer aveuglément que l'avortement est nécessairement bénéfique pour la femme.
Mais quels sont les troubles qui suivent un avortement ? Qu'est-ce exactement que le SPA ?
Selon le psychologue Christian Enrique Schnake Ferrer, on peut en distinguer deux manifestations : d'un côté les somatiques : anorexie et perte de poids, boulimie, nausées et vomissements, douleur abdominale et sensation de vide, palpitations, sensation d'oppression thoracique… Et de l'autre, les manifestations psychologiques : culpabilité et tristesse, énervement et hostilité, désespoir et pessimisme, diminution de la libido, chagrin, insomnie et hypersomnie, perte de concentration et de motivation.
Le Dr. Daling, connue pour son soutien à l'avortement a découvert en plus que parmi les femmes qui ont mené à terme une grossesse, le risque de cancer du sein était 50% plus élevé pour celles qui avaient subi un avortement préalable.
D'autres études comme celle de Mika Gissler (1997), du Centre Finlandais pour la Recherche et le Développement de la Santé et du Bien-Etre, ou des Drs. Reardon et Ney de l'Institut Eliot (2002) ont constaté que le fait d'avoir subi un avortement provoqué multiplie par 5 l'incidence des consommations de drogue et d'alcool et augmente considérablement le risque de suicide.
Le Dr. Donna Harrison, de l' American Association of Prolife Obstetritians and Ginecologists (AAPOG), participante au Congrès, a signalé que l'expérience nord-américaine démontre que l'avortement légalisé ne peut être qualifié de sûr puisqu'il augmente aussi les risques d'accouchement prématuré et d'autres complications.

Las organizaciones abajo firmantes queremos expresar nuestra profunda decepción y malestar por el fracaso del Congreso Women Deliver en su objetivo por alcanzar la 5º Meta del Desarrollo del Milenio, que consiste en la reducción de la mortalidad materna.
Los Delegados hemos sido invitados a asistir a un Congreso Internacional para analizar las causas, prevención y tratamiento de las complicaciones durante el embarazo y el parto que han causado la muerte de tantas mujeres, particularmente en países en vías de desarrollo, y a buscar soluciones eficaces a este grave problema.
Lamentablemente, la agenda en este Congreso ha estado tan sesgada ideológicamente hacia la promoción del aborto, que las verdaderas necesidades de atención a la salud materna e infantil han sido ignoradas en las sesiones plenarias y han estado escasamente presentes en los paneles de discusión.
Numerosos informes de Naciones Unidas como el “The World's Women 2005: Progress in Statistics”, han concluido que no hay datos rigurosos disponibles sobre el índice de mortalidad materna, aborto incluido, especialmente en los países en vías de desarrollo. Por lo tanto la presentación, como un hecho indiscutible, de datos sin fundamento sobre el aborto ilegal sólo puede ser interpretada como un intento deliberado de manipular a los asistentes al Congreso y a la comunidad internacional.
El asegurar que los “abortos no seguros” son sólo aquellos que son ilegales o encubiertos (y deducir, consecuentemente, que el aborto legal es seguro) es al mismo tiempo engañoso y científicamente erróneo. El hecho de que la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) no esté recopilando información acerca de la mortalidad relacionada con los abortos legales es totalmente inaceptable, si es que existe un verdadero compromiso por contar con estadísticas basadas en datos precisos y significativos.
Las afirmaciones escuchadas en el Congreso respecto a que las mejoras en la tasa de mortalidad materna dependen de la promoción del aborto legal no sólo son falsas, sino que además desvían la atención de la necesidad urgente del acceso a una atención sanitaria básica, atención especializada en los partos y emergencias obstétricas.
Por lo tanto, nos oponemos al hecho de que:
- Miembros del Comité Organizador, incluyendo la Federación Internacional de Planificación Familiar (IPPF) y Marie Stopes Internacional, que tienen intereses económicos en la provisión del aborto, hayan utilizado este Congreso para promover su propia agenda y extender el aborto en los países en vías de desarrollo.
- El Comité Organizador ha intentado generar un falso consenso en torno a ideas preconcebidas para asegurar que solamente aquellos puntos de vista que refuerzan dichas ideas estuvieran representados en el congreso.
- El Congreso ha dejado de lado los principales temas relacionados con la mortalidad materna (condiciones básicas de salud, acceso a las vacunas, agua potable, salubridad, nutrición básica, atención primaria médica en el periodo post y peri natal, fístula, mutilación genital femenina, hemorragias, preclampsia…) Este abandono es un serio acto de negligencia que conduce no sólo a continuar sino a aumentar los riesgos asociados a la salud materna.
Hacemos un llamamiento a los organizadores y colaboradores en el Congreso a centrarse en el cuidado de la salud básica, la atención especializada y obstétrica de emergencia, que han sido la clave en la disminución de la mortalidad materna en los países desarrollados, en lugar de explotar la tragedia de la mortalidad materna para promover un supuesto derecho al aborto.
