Religious Liberty
Religion holds special significance in the daily lives of many of the world's families, fostering respect, love, and humanitarian acts of compassion. The close connection of religion to political freedom and civic virtue is evident in the founding of the United States. The Constitution's first amendment guaranteed religious freedom untrammeled by the state, while the nation's first president, the incomparable George Washington, insisted that religious liberty was a necessary ingredient of a free republic. As the repository of values proved in the crucible of history, religious liberty continues to be as necessary as ever, but is under attack by those claiming it has no place in the public square.
