“Is abortion a crime against the unborn or an important medical procedure that helps women control their own bodies and destinies?” begins the text of a CBS News slide show chronicling the 25 U.S. states with the highest abortion rate.  The ranking is by percentage, not total abortions.

You’ve probably read the recent media stories about New York City and its “shocking” abortion rate of 40 percent (60 percent for African Americans).  The nationwide average is 20 percent.  This CBS News list gives abortion numbers for 2008 and shows Delaware as having the highest percentage rate of abortion – New York State is number two.
