25 Feb Day Three: Launch of a new UN Agency
Amid great fanfare and song, a new branch of the United Nations was launched Thursday night — UN Women.
Christiane Amanpour, ABC news anchor, was the master of ceremonies, and the program included academy award winning actresses Geena Davis and Nicole Kidman, Princess Christina of Spain, Rakhi Sahi — a former commander of an all-female police unit in Liberia, Ted Turner — the head of the UN Foundation, and the United Nations International School Choir.
“We are putting women at the centre of our activities around the world,” said UN Secretary-General Ban Kim-moon. “Women are the breadwinners who can help their families and their countries out of poverty. They are the mothers who provide food, the leaders who encourage education and raise the next generation. Women are the police and peacemakers who can help forge peace and stability.”
