The deeper question is “What constitutes excessive patriotism?”
When a soldier dies for his or her country I’d say that falls under the category of excessive, yet no one would condemn that act. In my opinion, putting country above God is wrong. We are obligated to protect first, our families, second, our communities and third, our country before other countries. If we don’t, we will not be strong enough to help others.
Aspiring to harm, injure, or abuse other countries is wrong. Indifference is wrong. Caring for our own is simply responsibility.
Nationalism carries a negative connotation because leaders have used it wrongly. Pride is wrong. Appreciation for blessing is wise.
