According to this survey, 82% of current online daters in China said they would be open to having a romantic relationship with AI. Worldwide, 67% of online daters suggested they would be open to dating AI. When asked, a whopping 81% of respondents reported feeling lonely in their day to day lives. It seems that many are searching to mend their loneliness through simulated affection rather than making human connections.

A 2026 study found that one out of every seven respondents (ages 18-30 in committed relationships) regularly used an AI chatbot to simulate a romantic partner. The role their “partner” played varied from flirty or romantic texting to sexual roleplay.

The study found that the majority of those surveyed (69%) did not want their real partner to find out about the virtual one. This shows that those using AI realize that their real life partner would be upset by their partner’s use of AI.

The majority (68%) of respondents said that it was easier to share their feelings with their AI chat over a human companion, and 65% of respondents said it was easier to be themselves with a chatbot.

Triangulation appears when instead of discussing and resolving conflict with their real life partner, the chatter goes to their AI to vent, complain and get validation from it.
