Clint Eastwood’s speech at the Republic National Convention sure made waves this past week. Like many others, I thought the timing of the speech and some of the content was a bit unusual – but there were some elements that I loved. I especially appreciated how candid he was about not having us believe that all in Hollywood are against conservative values.
Mr. Eastwood said:
“I know what you are thinking. You are thinking, what’s a movie tradesman doing out here? You know they are all left wingers out there, left of Lenin [referring to Hollywood]. At least that is what people think. That is not really the case. There are a lot of conservative people, a lot of moderate people, Republicans, Democrats, in Hollywood. It is just that the conservative people by the nature of the word itself play closer to the vest. They do not go around hot dogging it” [emphasis mine]
No matter whether a Republican or a Democrat conservative, I think a segment from one of my kids’ favorite movies, Bug’s Life, illustrates how the media and Hollywood would like us conservatives to feel. The overbearing grasshoppers want the ants, which they would compare to conservatives, to stay in their place. If the grasshoppers, which would compare to the media and Hollywood, bully enough or are loud enough, they can keep the ants under control. As the lead grasshopper acknowledges, the grasshoppers should fear that “they ALL might stand up to us”.
Perhaps WE, the conservatives, need to start “hot dogging it” and “stand up to them”.
